This music is inspired by the German folksong, "Die Musici." [All things shall perish from under the sky. Music alone shall live, never to die.] How very appropriate are these sentiments today, as we celebrate the enduring strength of music through pandemic trials.

The musical expression focuses on several aspects of this song. All things shall perish is reflected in the wide instrumental range, with the opening phrase given to Tuba, answered soon by Piccolo.

When the ensemble enters, it is with rhythmic energy. For this is celebratory music. Key modulations joyfully rise from F to A to C.

Near the end, ostinato patterns, starting with Tuba, layer upon each other until all instruments are playing "with maximum energy." Never to die!
