As Evening Falls

for Organ (2025)

Return to Gwyneth Walker Music Catalog

As Evening Falls was created as a sequel, a musical companion, to Greet the Day. For, as life is celebrated with the start of the new day, so also is there a quiet blessing with the setting sun.

The theme sings these imagined phrases:

As evening falls with the setting sun,
I lay my burdens down, my journey is done.

This music often presents falling (descending) patterns. The introductory chords unfold downward. Any many of the intermediary passages involve descent, as falling light at the end of the day.

The listener may hear added-tone sonorities. These are intended to reflect the rays of light as an indistinct blur of sound. The added tones create a dissonance that speaks to the poignant mixture of peace and sorrow at the end of the day. The final F/E falling semi-tone lingers. My journey is done.
